About Compass

Compass Learning is a specialist managed education service, providing part-time alternative provision, operating in term-time. We believe every child can make meaningful progress when the right support is put around them. That’s why we take a needs-led approach to referrals, working carefully with commissioners, families and professionals to understand each young person and build the right package of support.

Our service is run by qualified teachers who have vast experience in educational leader. They plan, manage and maintain the quality of every young person's personalised programme.

Our tutors are central to the delivery of every Compass programme, working directly with learners to provide consistent, high-quality support. We are committed to creating a supportive and collaborative environment where tutors feel valued, well supported and confident in the work they deliver.

We support this through regular CPD and development events and WhatsApp broadcast channels, sharing helpful videos and blogs about our delivery model. Alongside dedicated WhatsApp tutor groups where members of our tutor community can share ideas, ask questions and access peer support. Our specialist Programme Managers are also always on hand via WhatsApp or phone to provide advice, guidance and support with any queries that arise during delivery.

About the Opportunity

We are building a growing network of tutors who want to make a meaningful difference to children and young people who may not currently be thriving in traditional education settings.

As a Compass tutor, you will work 1:1 with learners, or in small online groups, dependent on the assignment, using your subject expertise alongside a relational, flexible approach. Many of the young people we support have SEND, including Autism, ADHD and SEMH needs, so the ability to adapt, build trust and respond to the individual is just as important as strong subject knowledge.

Our programmes are carefully designed around each learner’s needs and outcomes. You will be supported by our Programme Managers and provided with clear information about the learner, their programme and the priorities for each placement.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your work may include:

• Delivering 1:1 English and/or Maths tuition across KS1–KS4.
• Teaching additional subjects where these match your experience and specialism.
• Adapting lessons to suit the learner’s ability, SEND profile, interests and learning needs.
• Using creative and engaging approaches to rebuild confidence and motivation.
• Developing positive, consistent relationships with learners.
• Supporting both academic progress and wider personal development.
• Providing brief feedback on progress to help inform ongoing programme reviews.

Sessions take place during the school day and may be delivered in a learner’s home, a local community venue or another agreed setting.

Who We’re Looking For

We are interested in hearing from tutors who are patient, adaptable and confident working independently with children and young people.

You should have:

• A Bachelors degree or equivalent professional qualification, or be studying toward a Bachelors undergraduate degree
• Good knowledge of the curriculum and the subject areas you intend to teach.
• Experience working with children or young people with SEND.
• The ability to build rapport with learners who may have experienced disengagement, anxiety or difficulties within education.
• A good understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to completing required training.
• An Enhanced DBS registered with the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
• The ability to travel to learner locations for in-person placements.
• Strong communication skills, reliability and professional judgement.
